Number of elderly receiving free home care falls by 11 per cent

The Telegraph reports that there has been a significant fall in those able to access free home care since the public spending cuts.
It is reported that there has been an 11% fall in the number of elderly or vulnerable people who have their home care paid for by local authorities as well as a large variation in the cost of carer services. The cost of home care is means tested and the research indicates that 8 out of 10 councils are only offering free home care to people with critical needs.

The Daily Mail reports on the NHS chief who is asking nurses to see the elderly as individuals, not "conditions".
Sir Keith Pearson, chairman of the NHS Confederation, is calling for staff in all hospitals and care homes to treat the elderly with respect and stamp out all poor or undignified care. Nurses are responding by pointing out that they try to provide the highest levels of care but are often unable to due to staff shortages caused by drastic budget cuts.
